Our Partner: Revolutionary Youth and Women Artisans Self Help Group

Aware has been partnering with the Revolutionary Youth and Women Artisans Self Help Group (RYWA) in Kenya since 2008, check out our projects page for more information about our work together.

Since 2008, Aware has been working with RYWA and its chairperson, Raynor Miguda, to empower children so that they can reach their full potential – as is every child’s right.

RYWA was founded by youth and women who were moved by the plight of vulnerable orphans living in the slums of Obunga in Kisumu city. Kisumu is a city of 350,000 who has been effected dramatically by HIV, resulting in a high rate of mortality in adults.  This leaves orphans and other vulnerable children who are in desperate need of empowerment.

The organisation serves children who undergo serious emotional and material deprivation. It was this observation that prompted Raynor into thinking of how to make a change in these children’s lives directly.

RYWA is currently supporting a targeted group of vulnerable children in their pursuit of formal education by; paying school levies and other related education needs; providing of life skills education to the targeted children; giving children support with their academic work; and providing skills in audio and visual arts.

It is the latter in which Aware provides support and materials to RYWA. We’re not usually ones to toot our own horn, but our partnership has helped to implement RYWA’s programs like training of youth, purchasing raw materials for art and craft programs, identifying a market abroad for RYWA’s finished art products, and the facilitation of other activities that support children!

How cool is this soapstone hippo?

We could not be more proud to be in partnership with an organisation like RYWA!!
